While poking around in my spring garden I saw shoots coming out from where I had planted disco bell hibiscus last year. They are a giant flower, quite lovely. While cleaning up the garden last fall, I couldn’t quite pull out the tree like stalks, so I figured I’d leave them in the ground to rot a bit through the winter.
Suprise! They didn’t rot but came back again in a bush like manner. Being in Chicago, I really didn’t except this to happen. I thought they were a tropical plant, and added them to my monarch waystation/ butterfly garden as a source of nectar for all the hummingbirds who visit the area.
Anyone else have some ‘suprises’ in the garden this spring? I’m sure I’ll have more as the season progressess.
